Summary
In partnership with Republic Services, Ameresco developed, operates and owns the Brickyard RNG facility in Danville, Illinois. The plant converts biogas or landfill gas (LFG) generated by the landfill digestion process into an RNG pipeline of quality gas to be made available to the cities, counties, and businesses of the Danville area and will contribute to Republic Services’ longstanding sustainability goal to beneficially reuse 50% more of their biogas by 2030.

In addition to ensuring that clean energy resources are available to the cities, counties, and businesses of the Danville, IL area, the Brickyard RNG plant is designed to provide the following benefits:
- Generate a dependable, dispatchable source of renewable energy
- Improved air quality for the region
- Reduce approximately 27,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions per year
- Emissions equivalency of carbon sequestrated by planting ~326,000 acres of forests or 31 million gallons of gasoline not being combusted

Solution
As the twelfth renewable energy project with Republic Services, Ameresco was the partner chosen to develop landfill gas for the RNG facility by converting biogas into a low-carbon fuel source. The facility includes gas processing equipment to remove harmful gases and pollutants from the source biogas. The final gas product will be compressed and sent to the natural gas utility for monitoring and metering before injection into the pipeline. The facility, scheduled to achieve commercial operation in September 2024, is currently commissioned and can process 2,000 standard cubic feet per minute of raw landfill gas and feed directly into a pipeline.
